Follow the water from roof to foundation
During rain, large roof areas can deliver a concentrated volume of water through gutters and downspouts. If the discharge ends beside the building or a drain is blocked, water can collect at a foundation. On a sloped lot, runoff may also arrive from higher ground and affect the uphill wall first.
The visible symptom may appear somewhere else. Water can move along the footing, below a slab, or through a crawl space before it reaches the place you notice. We compare both sides of the building and review safe discharge options rather than assuming the nearest stain is the starting point.

Surface drainage or French drain?
A surface drain collects water that runs across patios, driveways, or low areas. A French drain collects water moving through soil. They solve different parts of the problem and may be used together. The route must also end at a suitable discharge point; collecting water without a safe outlet does not complete the system.
When gravity cannot move collected water away, a sump pump may be considered. Pump size, basin volume, power, check valve, backup, and discharge location are planned as one system.
