The choice between an interior and an exterior system is rarely a matter of preference. These conditions usually narrow it down before any product is selected.
- Where water first becomes visible, and how high it appears on the wall
- Whether the outside of the affected wall can be reached and exposed safely
- Wall depth, and what sits above the soil line — patios, driveways, decks, or planting beds
- Whether water also appears through the floor, not only the wall
- Utility lines, meters, and service routes near the planned work area
- Whether collected water has a gravity outlet or needs a pump
- Distance to the property line and the access width for equipment
- Whether an earlier system was installed, and how it failed
Interior basement waterproofing
Interior work manages water after it reaches or approaches the inside foundation area. It is often considered when exterior access is limited, water appears near the slab edge, or below-floor water needs collection.
Perimeter drainage
Collects water near the wall-floor area and directs it to a basin or suitable outlet.
Sump pump system
Removes collected water when gravity drainage cannot provide a suitable route.
Crack treatment
Seals suitable non-structural cracks from the accessible side when they form part of the water path.
Wall management
Directs wall moisture toward the drainage system rather than relying only on a surface coating.
Exterior basement waterproofing
Exterior work aims to block or manage water at the outside face of a below-grade wall. Because the wall has to be exposed before anything can be applied to it, the site usually decides whether the method is practical at all — utilities, patios, landscaping, driveways, narrow side yards, and wall depth all affect what can be reached.

Interior work
- Work stays indoors, so weather rarely delays it
- The floor edge may be opened, which creates dust and noise inside
- Stored items and finished walls near the perimeter usually have to be moved
- Outside landscaping and paving normally stay untouched
- A pump and its power supply become part of the finished system
Exterior work
- Work happens outside, so weather and soil conditions affect scheduling
- Soil, and sometimes paving or planting, is removed and then restored
- Interior rooms usually stay usable while the work goes on
- Equipment needs a route to the wall and space to hold excavated soil
- Restoring the surface afterwards forms part of the scope
When a combined system is worth discussing
The two approaches are not always alternatives. A property may need both when water has more than one path into the space.
- An outside wall stays wet while water also rises near the slab edge
- Exterior access exists on one side of the building only
- An exterior barrier is added, but water already below the floor still has no route out
- Crack repair handles one entry point while drainage manages the wider area
Where only part of the foundation can be reached, a staged plan may cover the accessible area first and leave the remainder for later review.
What neither method is meant to do
Both systems control water. Neither corrects the conditions below, and treating those as waterproofing problems usually delays the right repair.
- Structural movement, settlement, or bowing walls, which need a foundation specialist or engineer
- Plumbing leaks, sewer backups, or roof and gutter faults, which belong to other trades
- Existing mold growth and damaged materials, which are removed as separate work
- Humidity produced indoors rather than entering through the foundation
